Effective Annual Reviews Workshop

This workshop will provide an overview of the annual review process and include a discussion of:
- The importance of the annual review in the management of HDR candidatures
- Confirmation of candidature
- Supporting and advising students whose progress is not satisfactory
- Obligations and the role of the Chair of the Review Panel, and panel members
- Assessment of supervision as part of the review process
- Options available to the panel
Case scenarios of different types of progress reviews will be used to illustrate the above points. Participants are welcome to also highlight (anonymous) reviews that they have been involved with as a supervisor, student or panel member.

Dr Margaret Kiley (PhD, M.Ed.Admin, Grad Dip (Ed Admin), B.Ed. Dip T.)
Senior Lecturer Centre for Educational Development & Academic Methods (CEDAM), Australian National University. will be facilitating the following 4 sessions.
Dr Kiley is the convenor of the ANU’s Masters and Graduate Certificate in Higher Education and also runs programs for staff in areas of research supervision and research education. Dr Kiley has worked in the Centre for Educational Development & Academic Methods at the ANU since December 2004 after working for four years in the Centre for the Enhancement of Learning, Teaching and Scholarship (CELTS) at the University of Canberra and eight years at the University of Adelaide in the Advisory Centre for University Education (ACUE).

This workshop, suitable for all staff levels, will examine some of the issues for part-time candidates and their supervisors.The data for Australian higher degree candidates suggests that almost 40% of them will be enrolled part-time for at least some of their candidature. For many of these part-timers there is the additional issue of being located off-campus for much of their candidature.
This short workshop will assist you and your candidates to :
- Structure a program taking into account access & isolation needs
- Give timely feedback on work & monitor progress
- Understand isolation and lack of access issues and assist with strategies to overcome these
- Monitor progress & set clear timelines

Facilitator: Dr Margaret Kiley
Presenter: A/Prof. Sue Starfield is the Director of The Learning Centre and Associate Professor in the School of Education at UNSW. She is co-author with Brian Paltridge of Thesis and Dissertation Writing in a Second Language: A Handbook for Supervisors published by Routledge in 2007. She is co-editor of the journal English for Specific Purposes. She is the recipient of a 2008 Australian Learning and Teaching Council citation for an Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning for the development of a research-led innovative curriculum to support postgraduate research students' writing with significant impact on the field of postgraduate writing.
This workshop, in being presented in conjunction with A/Prof. Sue Starfield and is particularly suitable for Early Career Researchers.
While many academics can themselves write well, it is often difficult to assist research candidates to reach a suitably scholarly level for PhD examination. The aim of the workshop is to enhance supervisors’ skills and knowledge related assist candidates with writing.

This workshop is suitable for all supervisors at all research career levels.
The aim of the workshop is to provide research supervisors with enhanced understanding and skills related to supervising a diverse research candidate population. With a steady increase in the diverse cultural backgrounds of research candidates, and with an increasing number of academics from different cultural backgrounds, addressing issues related to supervising international candidates is critical.
This short workshop will assist you and your candidates to :
- Get started – expectations, memorandum of understanding, learning needs analysis
- Plan for critical challenges
- Highlight expectations and resources to assist the candidate
- Establish feedback on a tight schedule

This workshop is suitable for staff at all research career levels and most suitable for those who have not attended on of the student supervision workshops conducted at UNSW over the past three years.

a) Selecting examiners for PhD theses
b) Assisting candidates prepare for examination
c) Acting as an examiner for the doctoral thesis
